“NEW DREAMS” – TIBETAN ART SHOW
The art of SAMTEN DAKPA
“NEW DREAMS” at the Watchung Arts Center is built on “one of the most impressive bodies of work I have ever seenof traditional Tibetan art forms such as Thangka paintings” (Dr. Robert A. F. Thurman).
Tibetan art is closely integrated with Tibetan Buddhism. Thankga paintings, such as Dakpa’s “Green Tara” (pictured here), are typically centered around Buddha or a bodhisattva and shown against incredibly detailed and defined surroundings. The intensity and variety of colors are often striking and rarely found outside Himalayan art.
Dakpa states: “My work draws its inspiration from Tibetan Buddhist philosophy
and psychology but it has a contemporary inflection.”
Branching out beyond the formalized traditions and canons, Dakpa applies his sharp vision and color skills to create beautifully fluid “modern” Tibetan paintings, such as “The Horse Man From Eastern Tibet”, and amazing color drawings for a children’s book. Some of these works will be shown at the exhibition.
From the nomadic region of Eastern Tibet known as Khampa, Dakpa was born into a large family. As a young boy with no money for formal schooling, he herded goats, sheep and yak for the extended family all day in the high, isolated Himalayan mountains. He began teaching himself to draw in the snow, dirt, mud or anywhere he could leave a trace. Monks recognized his craftsmanship and his artistic journey began, leading him to India and eventually to his new home in the USA. Mr. Dakpa has exhibited all over the world and his creative efforts extend to sculpture, interior design and architecture.
